Organised in collaboration with the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and The Survey Association (TSA), this new launch is the result of an extensive industry consultation process, which has highlighted the need for a joint cooperative event that involves all the major players representing the geospatial community.

GEO Business intends to establish itself as the key event for the industry, where everyone involved in the gathering, storing, processing and delivering of geospatial information will be in attendance. With this aim in mind, Diversified Business Communications UK has acquired interests in GEO North and GEO South from PV Publications, ensuring that GEO Business will be the only geospatial trade show and conference to be held in the UK.

PVP’s managing director Stephen Booth says: “We have been talking to Diversified and their exhibition director Versha Carter for some time now and believe that they are the ideal organisation to carry forward geospatial events in the UK. We believe that this move is in the best interest of not only our exhibitors but the very many professionals who have attended our shows over the years.”

Graham Mills, President of TSA and Chairman of Technics Group said that Alison had made an outstanding contribution to the industry through the creation and delivery of challenging school projects that were igniting young minds about the building process.

COYO projects have given upper primary and secondary school students from the Scottish Highlands to London the opportunity to be the planners, surveyors, designers, engineers and project managers on their own sustainable building projects and to understand how maths, science and technology have practical applications in the real world.

On receiving her award, Alison commented, “I am honoured that an organisation synonymous with best practice in the surveying industry has given Class of Your Own this recognition.  It is encouraging to think that TSA members could be employing our students in years to come.”

Sponsored by Lockton, the President’s Award includes a £100 donation to a chosen charity. At Alison’s request the cash will benefit The Young Oncology Unit at Christies Hospital Withington, Manchester and is given in memory of Ryan Dover who died in November 2012 after a 2- year battle with cancer.

The Survey Association, known generally as TSA, is the trade body for commercial survey companies in the UK. The association was formed in 1979 to give a focus for private sector businesses in land and hydrographic survey.

The association has over 140 companies in membership as full, associate, supplier, affiliate or academic members directly involved in the survey business. The full and associate member companies together employ over 2500 people.

The role of TSA is to promote best practice amongst its members, provide a forum for members for discussion, debate and continuing professional development and to the wider audience such as engineers, provide guidance on new methods and techniques and a list of suitably qualified and experienced companies.

TSA is also heavily involved in lobbying Government and other agencies such as the Environment Agency regarding policies likely to affect or involve the survey industry.

TSA meets regularly with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES) on a range of issues and has established the Survey Liaison Group (SLG). This body convenes at regular intervals to examine matters of mutual interest and to ensure that there is little or no duplication of effort by the three bodies

Members gathered on the Balcony overlooking the vast array of engines and carriages, enjoying a coffee and Danish pastry before the meeting began.  The AGM was completed fairly quickly, under the chairmanship of Graham Mills of Technics Group.  Graham continues as TSA President, with Stuart Dimond of MK Surveys as the new Vice-President.  Huge thanks go to John Witherden of Aworth Land Surveys who has been an excellent VP for TSA for the last five years.  John continues on Council and the full list for 2013 can be found on the ‘About Us’ page.

Graham Mills then announced that the President’s Award, kindly sponsored by Lockton, for 2013 was to be given to Alison Watson, from Class of Your Own, “For encouraging and enabling young people to discover surveying, engineering, design and construction.” 

Andrew Evans from Topcon, Alison’s main sponsor, accepted the award on her behalf.

One of the supreme and unmatched benefits of TSA Membership is the opportunity to discuss issues, concerns and new ideas openly and honestly.  Members enjoyed a 75-minute session discussing topics such as education, recruitment, low fees and licensing.  Some new suggestions and approaches to all of these things were noted by Council.

A magnificent buffet spread was then provided, down in the Great Hall and surrounded by breathtaking examples of engineering and motion. 

Enough time was built in to allow members to explore the museum.

The afternoon session was totally dedicated to BIM (Building Information Modelling) with comprehensive and wide-ranging presentations from:

 – Andy Rhoades (BAA) – the client’s perspective
 – Martin Penney and Peter Folwell – talking on behalf of TSA
 – Ian Bush on behalf of Chartered ICES – the Institution’s view on BIM
 – Tracey Stone for AutoDesk – their approach to BIM and the future
 – Paul Bryan for English Heritage – the client’s perspective

The meeting concluded with an explanation about TSA’s new BIM Special Interest Group and then tea and scones on the Balcony.  A fitting ending to a day rich in content!  The feedback has been first class:
